Were you there when East of Eden came to Waitaki? 

When East of Eden came to Ōamaru, our streets, buildings and community became part of a major international screen production. East of Eden: Through Our Eyes invited our community to share what they saw – from transformed locations and behind-the-scenes action to cast, crew and the unexpected moments that made filming here so memorable. 

The competition attracted around 70 entries, with our judging panel selecting a Top 10 that celebrates some of the standout stories and moments captured during filming. Explore the winning photographs below – and stay tuned for our Top 50 exhibition in Ōamaru’s Historic Precinct later in November.

Tyne Street is all lit up and bustling with onlookers - even though it is late word has spread around town that there is filming happening so many locals are around to watch. A man leaves the Criterion walking like someone who has had more than one too many. He hops on his horse and slowly rides away wobbling in his saddle - a scene these old buildings would have stood witness to many a time in this towns notorious past!

A large crowd of locals and visitors gathered at each corner and vantage point to catch a glimpse of and stars - we did see many local faces in period costume walking, stopping, reversing and repeating it all over again.
