Proposed District Plan
About the Proposed District Plan
We’re reviewing and updating our District Plan. The Waitaki District Plan is the community’s rulebook, setting out how land use and development is managed within our district. It has a major role in shaping Waitaki's future and sets out a framework for managing natural and physical resources in the district.
The District Plan's rules set out what activities you can do as of right (permitted activities) and what activities you'll need resource consent for. These rules cover things like residential development, subdivision of land, the height and location of buildings, commercial and industrial developments, noise and light, protecting heritage, cultural values and the natural environment.
We have been reviewing the District Plan to address:
- housing supply, choice, and affordability
- protecting biodiversity
- growth and infrastructure
- responding to climate change
- managing the risk of natural hazards.
The submission period has now closed. An update will be provided later this year on how the recent Plan Stop amendments will affect the Proposed District Plan process and when a summary of submissions will be available for further submissions.
Submissions were open from 1 March 2025 and close on 16 May 2025.
