Accessing a shared Waitaki District Council document

To protect Council information, you'll need to complete multi-factor authentication (MFA) the first time you open a shared document. This is a second check that confirms it's really you.

Open the file

Step 1.Open the email

Find the sharing email from Waitaki District Council and select Open.

If you can't find the email, check your junk or spam folder.

Step 2.Sign in

Use the same email address that received the invitation. Microsoft may ask you to:

  • sign in with an existing account, or
  • enter a verification code sent to your email address.

Step 3.Accept access

If prompted, review the permissions and select Accept.

Step 4.Complete multi-factor authentication

Microsoft will ask you to set up a second way to confirm your identity. You can:

Don't want to install an app? Select I want to set up a different method and choose Phone. You can then get a text message code or a phone call. A landline works for calls.

Follow the on-screen instructions to finish. In most cases you'll only do this once, although Microsoft may ask you to verify again in future for security reasons.

Step 5.Open the document

Once verification is complete, the document opens automatically.

Troubleshooting

I can't find the verification code

Check your:

  • junk mail
  • spam folder
  • Other or Focused inbox tabs.

If you still can't find it, go back to the document link and ask for a new code.

I can't access the document

Make sure you're signing in with the same email address that received the invitation. If you still have problems, contact the person who shared the file with you.
