The Waitaki District Council hosts the formal citizenship ceremony. This public ceremony is a very important step in the process of becoming a New Zealand citizen.
It is an opportunity for new citizens to publicly declare their allegiance to New Zealand and for our local community to welcome them on behalf of all New Zealanders. We host up to four citizenship ceremonies every year to formally present residents from overseas with their New Zealand citizenship.
Becoming a New Zealand Citizen
Applications to become a New Zealand citizen must be made to the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA). You can find information on this process on the Department of Internal Affairs website or phone them on 0800 22 51 51. Once your application to become a New Zealand citizen has been approved by the DIA, you must attend a Citizenship Ceremony.
Please note: You will not be New Zealand citizen until you have said your oath or affirmation at the ceremony
