Council and Heritage

We recognise that Council has a shared responsibility for protecting and enhancing Council owned heritage.

Council recognises that people looking after heritage places often need specialist advice – from building conservation specialists and architects, specialist engineering advice, or specialist tradespeople. On top of this, traditional materials can be more expensive or complicated to source.

In 2018, we appointed a Heritage Advisor to assist owners through Council processes and to help them access professional advice and funding. You can contact our Heritage Advisor on

We are also proud of our Council-owned heritage. Major projects include:

  • The Oamaru Opera House Restoration
  • Forrester Gallery Restoration
  • North Otago Museum and Waitaki District Archives
