Permit parking

In Oamaru, you can pay for parking in the off-street parks in advance for three, six and 12 months. You will be issued with a permit which must be clearly displayed on the dashboard or windscreen of the car. Permit Parking areas are marked in the Medway and Steward Street car parks and should only be used by those with permits.

In the Steward Street park the permit area is the western part near the hospital emergency entrance and the eastern side of Medway Street park behind the Bridge Club. The southern half of Medway Street is also designated Permit Parking. In the Eden Street parks permit holders may park in any available Pay and Display area.

Please note: Permits allow parking in the Off Street Car Parks in Medway, Steward, and Eden Streets only. It does not permit free parking in the metered spaces on Thames, Eden, Ribble, Coquet, and Wear Streets. In these areas, Pay & Display Vouchers from the on street parking meters must be displayed on your vehicle.

Parking space booking

If you want to book a parking space for a set period of time in areas where there is metered parking or restricted parking in our district, you will need to get a parking space permit from Council. These permits are generally required by contractors who need a goods or service vehicle to be parked outside the premises in which work is being carried out.

Other reasons for booking a parking space may include individuals and/or organisations involved in promotional activities, community activities and business relocation.

How to apply for a Parking space permit

A permit can be obtained from our offices in Oamaru or Palmerston. You can book a parking space for a maximum of six months.
