Road Safety Education
Waitaki Road Safety encourages safer choices by all road users to help reduce deaths and serious injury crashes across our district.
We support, coordinate, and deliver road safety education. Our programme content is based on needs identified via local crash data and feedback from our road safety partners. NZTA is our primary funding partner, and we work closely with local organisations to deliver our programmes.
Our Programmes
Driving Under the Influence Intervention Programme
Delivered in partnership with Let’s Talk, this programme supports people who have committed alcohol or substance-related driving offences, including Excess Breath Alcohol.
Participants may attend through Department of Corrections sentencing pathways, referrals from Police or lawyers, or by self-referral. Sessions are available in group or one-on-one settings, and tailored programmes can be delivered to community groups for prevention and education.
The programme includes a powerful video about a local fatal crash, supported by evidence-based information on how alcohol and other substances affect judgement, reaction time, and vehicle control. Participants complete a reflective questionnaire and take part in guided discussion to support safer driving choices. Confidential support is available for anyone needing help with alcohol or substance use.
Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA)
Delivered in partnership with RYDA, emergency services, and locally supported by TMC (Traffic Management Control LTD), this interactive programme supports young people of driving age.
Students take part in six prevention education sessions and cover the following topics:
- Speed, alcohol and drugs, fatigue, distraction, and seat belt use.
- Driver and passenger responsibility.
- Making safer choices on the road.
Young Driver Education
We work with secondary schools and emergency services to deliver education that responds to local road safety issues. We also support Students Against Dangerous Driving (SADD), a peer-led programme that empowers students to positively influence their peers and promote safer driving.
Staying Safe - Refresher Driving for Senior Drivers
Delivered in partnership with Age Concern, this free NZTA-approved classroom workshop covers safe driving practices, updates on road rules, and guidance on licence renewal.
Bike Ready (ages 8 - 12)
Delivered in partnership with Youthtown and local schools, this free practical cycling programme builds confidence and safe riding skills. Sessions are led by our facilitators, who are Bike Ready trained, and includes a classroom road rules session.
Skills covered include bike and helmet safety checks, starting and stopping, steering and manoeuvring, looking behind, signalling, and using gears.
Clued Up Kids (ages 9 - 10)
As part of this all-schools safety event, road safety education is delivered in partnership with Police and Sport Waitaki. Children learn about road crossing safety, bus safety, and scooter safety.
Fatigue Stops
We run two Fatigue Stops each year, in partnership with emergency services, alongside Police checkpoints. Drivers are encouraged to take a break, enjoy a free BBQ and cuppa, and learn about managing fatigue while travelling. These stops help drivers feel refreshed, more alert, and safer on the road.
Drive Safer Waitaki
A community road safety education programme and radio campaign designed to reach a wide range of road users.
