Placing private items on road reserve

Can I place items such as skip bins or a shipping container outside my property?

Yes you can on a temporary basis up to three months. We no longer require you to obtain a permit for this, but ask that you do so in accordance with the following conditions:

  • The container/bin shall be positioned to ensure no hazard is posed to the public, and sight visibility is not impeded for traffic or from driveways.
  • The container/bin shall not be placed on the footpath. Footpaths are not designed to withstand the weight of these heavy items.
  • Any road markings on the road surface shall not be covered by the container/bin.
  • Reflective tape or traffic cones are recommended at the outer corners to provide warning to oncoming traffic at night.

The use of timber planks placed beneath the container/bin is recommended to ensure no damage to the surface of the road. Any resulting damage to the road corridor and associated infrastructure from the container/bin shall be repaired at the property owner's cost.

Can I place a ladder on the footpath outside my property to paint a fence or trim a hedge?

Yes you can but only during daylight hours, while ensuring at least 1.5m of clear footpath space. Make sure you clean up the area you have been occupying when you're finished.
