The South Island Dairy Event (SIDE) flowed in to Ōamaru this week for a 2-day industry event delivering keynote addresses, networking sessions and practical workshops.

The Ōamaru Opera House was thrilled to host workshops and keynote sessions for the conference.

“It has been fantastic,” said Ōamaru Opera House Event Coordinator Matthew Wicks. “It is nice to have people back and it’s great to see the building come to life.”

The event was held between the Brydone Hotel and the Ōamaru Opera House which worked well. “It has been great to work with the Brydone and utilise both venues to host such an event.” Said Wicks.

SIDE Event committee member and local, Rebecca Finlay enjoyed showing the delegates what Ōamaru has to offer. “We involved local produce, businesses, and food. The event gave Ōamaru the opportunity to showcase itself.”

The delegates moved across town and enjoyed the offerings from Steampunk HQ before moving on to the Loan and Merc for a dinner on the first night.

“This event was supported by the Government’s Regional Events Fund and it’s great to see local businesses benefitting from the delegates visit”. Melanie Jones, Business Attraction and Recovery Manager.

Finlay acknowledged that the farmers have been looking forward to connection and positivity, especially on the back of a couple of difficult years due to Covid.

SIDE Chairman Andrew Slater recognised the successful event in his closing address. “We have had an absolutely fantastic last two days… Ōamaru has certainly looked after us.”

In a wonderful gesture for the community, the SIDE event donated $1000 toward the Network Waitaki Event Centre with representative Denise McMillan accepting the donation for the Centre.
