Matt Sisson becomes Oamaru Airport’s first full time manager

As Oamaru Airports first ever full-time manager, Matt Sisson has spent his first month in the role getting to know the country’s sixth busiest airport for plane movements. “I don’t think people understand just how many aircraft are on the move just north of town these days” he said, “The idea that Oamaru is a sleepy little airport is definitely not the reality once you get airside. That presents challenges, and the most important one is how the airport grows sustainably and safely in the future”

With more than 14 years’ experience as an aircraft engineer at Air New Zealand, he’s no stranger to the aviation world. That hands-on technical background naturally led him into managing Airport Operations and Safety at Timaru and Hokitika Airports, where he focused on keeping things running smoothly and safely for both staff and travelers.

Matt brings close to 10 years of experience in construction project management — including leading the apron extension and runway reseal at Timaru Airport. His mix of aviation and project work means he’s got a sharp eye for detail, a strong sense of the big picture, and a practical, solution-focused mindset.

Ensuring the current runway surface life extends to the 2027/28 financial year, when the Long-Term Plan budget allocates funding for resurfacing, is also a priority.

“My role is to manage the airport, meet all of the safety and regulatory requirements and ensure that the assets owned by Council meet the planning and budgetary needs set by the Mayor and Councillors.”

Speaking about the appointment, Council Chief Executive, Alex Parmley said: “Oamaru airport is a fantastic asset for our district and our local economy and it has grown immensly over recent years. This means there is more to do to ensure the airport runs safely, and that it is well managed and maintained, particularly with this increased use. Carrying on the way we were was not an option and we knew we needed an aviation professional with a community focus and a collaborative approach to help us manage the airport and make improvements.”

“It is great to welcome Matt to Waitaki. He’s genuinely passionate about the aviation industry and is looking forward to working alongside Council teams and the users of the airport to help deliver a safe, efficient, and community-friendly airport environment.”
