Replacement tree to be planted on Kakanui Valley Road during this planting season
This week, Network Waitaki have removed one of the District’s Memorial Oaks from its site on Bridge Road, Maheno.
The tree, planted in 1919 to honour the memory of two fallen locals in World War One, had grown to a point that its branches were infringing on the space of overhead power lines.
A cut and trim notice was issued to Waitaki District Council, and after discussion the removal and replacement of the tree was viewed as the best solution, ensuring the safety of the power network, while also respecting and continuing the legacy of the Memorial Oaks.
Waitaki District Council worked with the Memorial Oaks committee, who agreed to the tree removal, and the planting of a replacement on nearby Kakanui Valley Road during this planting season. The family of those commemorated by the oak were also consulted.
The removal and replacement of a Memorial Oak is a rare event, but with the changes in infrastructure and expansion of the Waitaki District’s townships over the last 106 years, occasionally there are issues with a mature tree.
The new tree will be clear of any power lines and be able to grow into its natural form.
Thanks to the Memorial Oak Committee, the family of those commemorated, and Network Waitaki for partnering to find a long-term solution.
