A new 600 metre section of track will be opened to Alps 2 Ocean users, thanks to the hard work of Kurow locals. In a 100% community driven project, all of the time, skill and materials for this work were sourced locally from the Waitaki Valley.
A small group of volunteers maintain the Kurow Hill track and saw the potential to hook the hill onto the new pipeline trail. Kurow-Duntroon Irrigation Company’s underground pipeline runes along the back of Kurow Township for 600 metre with a flat bike and walking friendly corridor.
The new section of track will connect the A2O from Mavis Shaw Reserve through to Ranfurly Street, taking cyclists away from the footpaths on Bledisloe Street and deliver them to the heart of Kurow.
The volunteers included Gary Hawkins Earthmoving, Murray and Geoff Turner, Brett Green Contracting, and Road Metals. The community would also like to thank Awakino Station who own the land KDIC have the easement on and KDIC for giving permission to build the track.
Council officers were asked for support and advice on the project, but the community asked Waitaki District Council to promote this fine example of a rural community coming together to get stuff done in tough economic times.
