Historic School Building Set for New Life as Community Arts Hub

Kurow School site to proposed to be reclassified as Historic Reserve.
A previously-loved part of Kurow’s history is one step closer to a vibrant new future as Waitaki District Council today approved the reclassification of the site to Historic Reserve, subject to statutory notification under the Reserves Act (1977).
The South Star School Trust has put forward a proposal to restore the former Kurow School building at 10 Ranfurly Street — a rare 1882 wooden schoolhouse and a Heritage New Zealand Category 2 historic place.
The Trust’s vision is to transform the building into a community arts and education centre, including a gallery showcasing local artists and a home for the Waitaki Art School, offering classes in visual arts, dance, music, drama, and crafts. Its heritage character and original location make it a unique setting for creative learning and community connection.
The proposal has been met with strong support from the Ahuriri Community Board, the Waitaki Valley Community Society Inc and local residents who value both the restoration of the historic building and the cultural and educational opportunities it will bring.
The Ahuriri Community Board has also endorsed progressing the steps needed to support the Trust, including helping enable the restoration and assisting the Trust to secure funding for the estimated $450,000 project.
This project represents a significant step for Kurow by restoring an important heritage building, creating a hub for arts, culture, and education and bringing new life to underutilised land.
Public notices will be published this week as part of the Reserves Act (1977) process, it is available online here: https://www.waitaki.govt.nz/Public-Notices/Public-Notice-%E2%80%93-Proposed-Reserve-Reclassification-Kurow
