The works on Holmes Wharf continue with the installation of hardwood heritage bollards and a new gate at Holmes Wharf due in the New Year.

The new design (image of design below) will have 1.2m high, 250mm diameter heritage bollards fixed by steel flanges / bolts to allow flexibility for removal in future if needed and a new gate. Bollards have been turned by the local Woodworkers Guide based at Ōamaru Racecourse and are ready for collection. The horizontal railing will be recycled from the wharf.

With the existing layout looking rather shabby and restricting carparking and vehicle manoeuvring at the start of Holmes Wharf.  The new bollards are being installed 27m east (further into the Wharf) of the existing barrier and will allow for parking for 10 extra vehicles.

Wheel stops will be installed using Pine H5 to match the outside edge of the wharf and will be set in 2m to allow pedestrian access along the edge of the wharf.

Harbour Area Committee Member, Kevin Murdoch said, “I am really happy with the new design, I really wanted the heritage bollards as they look great and provide accessibility.”

The project has been spearheaded by Waitaki District Council Projects and Assets Officer, Grant Rhodes, “It is wonderful to see the Holmes Wharf project come to life. We are being true to the heritage of the area and are recycling where we can. We have used old lampposts from the region to make the bollards and the horizontal hardwood railing will be recycled from the wharf.”

The streetlights in the mock up image have been superimposed to provide an indication of how they may look and fit in to the design. These will be discussed in more detail at a later date.

Councillor and Chair of the Harbour Area Committee, Jeremy Holding said “Holmes Wharfe is an iconic part of Ōamaru’s fabric. The contractors have done a great job making it structurally sound for now and into the future. The improvements with parking accessibility will provide the community with a better experience in years to come.”

The existing timber rail barrier and gate are being temporarily relocated today into the new position, which will provide additional car parking while the start of the wharf aged hardwood timbers is replaced as part of the current “Deck Replacement Contract”.  Temporary barriers are being installed today around the construction zone at the start of the wharf to enable the deck replacement work to proceed.

Carl Banks, Owners of Banks’s has been working on the project since the start of the year, “We started in early April, and we’re stoked to see the work progressing and are ahead of schedule.”

The deck replacement work at the start and end of the wharf is scheduled to be completed by Christmas, with some minor finishing work expected in the New Year.

More work around the harbour area is planned for future with Waitaki District Mayor, Gary Kircher noting, “Planning for the upgrade of the Farmers’ Market area and the rest of the gravelled area around Scott’s Brewing is also in the masterplan, something we would like to get on with as soon as it is feasible from a resourcing and funding perspective.”
