Final exhibitions before 6 week closure to fit-out and set-up new Forrester Gallery.

February will be the last chance to view the Forrester Gallery and its final exhibitions in its current form.

The gallery extension is nearing completion, and the Forrester Gallery will close on 1 March to allow the contractors and Gallery staff a six-week period to fit-out, move the collection, develop gallery spaces and prepare the new exhibitions.

However, before then there are still some amazing exhibitions on for you to enjoy. Some will close early to allow for connecting work between the atrium and the old gallery building.

Closing 15 February 2026: Sara McIntyre: Kākahi to Kākanui commences our inaugural artist residency, where Sara spent 10 weeks capturing Kākanui coastal life and connecting with members of the wider rohe.

On until 1 March 2026: Sione Tuívailala Monū and Edith Amituanai: Toloa Tales presents two inspiring moving image artworks filmed in Sāmoa, toured and commissioned by Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū.

Work on cutting in new doorways on the third floor last week also revealed some artefacts. While removing the windows, workers found some scraps of newspaper, a surprising number of buttons and a 1908 penny.

The money will not be added to the fundraising for the new gallery, but sponsorship of gallery blocks and stair risers is still available here: Help the Forrester Gallery Reach New Heights | Culture Waitaki
