Barnardos social services

Services available include:

LEAP social work support

  • Social work support for children and families facing multiple and complex challenges.
  • Support is tailored to the individual needs of each child and whānau, rather than a fixed programme approach.
  • Focuses on keeping vulnerable children safe and supporting whānau wellbeing.

LEAP works with children and families affected by:

  • Family and whānau violence.
  • Neglect or emotional abuse.
  • Risk of, or existing, statutory involvement.
  • Parental mental health concerns.
  • Harmful alcohol or drug use.
  • Significant child health or disability needs.

Family breakdown assessment

  • Assessment service for young people under 19 who are unable to live with their parents or guardians due to family breakdown.
  • Involves meeting with the young person, family members and other key people to understand the circumstances.
  • Assessment outcomes are provided to Work and Income New Zealand to inform decisions regarding eligibility for financial support, including the Unsupported Child Benefit, Youth Payment or Young Parent Payment.
