$3 million in grant funding secured for Project Reclaim Waitaki District Council is delighted to announce that the Government has provided $3 million in grant funding to support the now completed Project Reclaim. Project Reclaim removed 67,000 tonne of fly-tipped and oceanside landfill waste from three sites along the East Otago coastline in 2024, safely securing it 8km inland at a purpose-designed landfill cell near Palmerston.

Project Reclaim to move to Beach Road Waitaki District Council’s work to safeguard the coastline from a potential environmental disaster has progressed well, with over 35,000 tonnes of waste being removed from the former Hampden Landfill by Fulton Hogan and transported to a new landfill cell in Palmerston, constructed by Waste Management.
Project Reclaim begins waste excavation Excavation works to remove historic waste from sites in Hampden started on 17 June and will last around 12 weeks.
