Waitaki District Council is reviewing two gambling policies:
- the Class 4 Gambling Venues Policy 2022, and
- the TAB Venues Policy 2022.
These policies set the rules for where gambling machines (pokies) and standalone TAB venues can operate in the Waitaki District, and how they are managed.
Why is this review happening?
The law requires councils to have policies about gambling venues and to review them from time to time. These requirements come from the Gambling Act 2003 and the Racing Industry Act 2020.
The Gambling Act 2003 requires councils to adopt a policy that specifies:
- where Class 4 gambling venues may be established
- whether relocation will be permitted, and under what circumstances
The public consultation period will be live from 4 May to 5 June and the online survey can be accessed here:
(insert link) or hard copies will be available at our service centres and libraries for the duration of the consultation.
- any restrictions on the number of machines allowed at a venue
- the approach to mergers of clubs
The Racing Industry Act 2020 requires councils to adopt a policy specifying:
- where standalone TAB venues may be established
