Oamaru Public Gardens is home to New Zealand's first Chinese garden. Created in 1988, it was built as a symbol of the friendship between Oamaru and the large Chinese community in the Waitaki district, most of them descendants of the Central Otago gold miners. It is a serene space with a rockery, water features and sculptures, including a colourful ceramic dragon and pandas carved from Oamaru limestone.
