Elected Members put on variety show for the Far North District

Waitaki District Councillors are rolling out the red carpet, dusting off their top hat and canes and tuning the piano as they prepare a Variety Show Fundraiser for the Far North District.

Councillor Tim Blackler said, “When we heard about the Adopt a Community programme, all elected members were immediately on board to see how we can support. All funds raised from this event will go directly to the Far North Mayoral Fund.”

The show will feature a wide range of performances ranging from classical to contemporary and be an event to suit the whole family. Dunedin based Jonathan Usher, Magician will take on the role of MC and accomplished vocalist, Claire Barton (Mezzo-Soprano) will be accompanied by Ron Newton. Other performances include the Pipe Band & Highland Dancers combined, Brass Band, Samoan dancing and more! Raffles are also being organised on the day by residents and team members from a local rest home – and elected members may even be performing themselves.

Waitaki District Mayor, Gary Kircher said, “Waitaki isn’t immune to severe weather or civil defence events so as soon as we heard about Adopt a Community, we wanted to do what we could to support the Far North District. We have huge talent in the district, and this is a great way to showcase that and support the Far North District.”

While the showcase has been led by elected members, they have been supported by Musical Theatre Ōamaru who have a huge amount of experience in putting on a show at this scale. The wider council team have also assisted through promotions, administration, and logistics.

Cr Blackler continued, “People have been wanting to support those affected in the North Island. While the immediate weather event is over, there is a long road to recovery and our community recognises this.”

Adopt a District is a nationwide initiative that connects councils with regions devastated by Cyclone Gabrielle. It is a way for mayors, councils, and the community alike to reach out and provide support - community to community.

Far North District Mayor Moko Tepania said, “We love hearing about all the support from the Waitaki District and the Variety Show sounds like it will show case a lot of talent. We certainly feel the aroha all the way up the line here in the Far North. Whakawhetai – thank you so much Waitaki!”

The Variety Show will be held at the Ōamaru Opera House on Sunday 2 April. Tickets can be purchased from Waitaki District Council HQ, Roses General Store, Ōamaru Opera House and Delectables Bakery. $15 per adult, $5 per child.
