Third Capability Waitaki cohort welcomed

Previous two years have seen 100% pass rate from 17 graduates
The Capability Waitaki programme continues to grow leaders from within our community, and Cohort 3 is no exception. This third intake builds on the success of the first two cohorts, which saw 17 Māori and Pacific students from Waitaki complete a Bachelor of Applied Management through Otago Polytechnic and Capable NZ.
They were welcomed last Tuesday, with kai, korero and a wānanga led by Nola Tipa to begin their journey to qualifications in Applied Management and Social Work.
Many graduated with Distinction or Merit, and their achievements have already begun to ripple through their workplaces, whānau, and wider communities. Funded by the Ministry of Social Development and delivered in partnership between Waitaki District Council, Oamaru Pacific Island Trust, mana whenua ki Moeraki, and the Office of the Mayor, Capability Waitaki is more than a qualification.
“This is such a special programme to be a part of, to be connected to something that does deliver for our community and helps develop our workforce and helps Maori and Pasifika to gain qualifications that they may not have had the opportunity to achieve earlier in life” said Mayor Gary Kircher.
It is a celebration of identity, resilience, and collective success. The programme offers a uniquely Māori and Pacific approach to learning, grounded in values and community aspirations.
Students have described their achievements as shared victories, opening doors not just for themselves but for future generations. With tertiary education participation in Waitaki sitting at just 2.6 percent - less than half the national average - Capability Waitaki is helping close the gap.
It is a practical, values-based initiative that is lifting aspirations, building confidence, and creating real opportunities for Māori and Pacific Peoples in our region.
