New signage for Beach Road after community feedback
Published on 10 September 2026
An idea from a thoughtful and considerate Waitakian has led to new signage at Beach Road.
The signs, which have been placed on the barriers at the Golf Course, Awamoa Road and Beach Road South – set out the $400 penalty for fly-tipping and encourage walkers, cyclists and those driving up to the barriers to ‘Leave only footprints – it’s the Waitaki Way’.
Steve Clarke, Council’s Compliance Lead, said: “A local has been clearing up broken glass and cans along here, and got in touch asking if we could put up some signage to encourage people to make the right choice.”
The good Samaritan, who has requested that they remain anonymous, assisted Mr Clarke with putting the signs up on Wednesday, the same day Council issued two infringement notices of $400 for littering at the Awamoa Road and Beach Road junction.
Council would like to thank everyone who reports fly-tipping using Council’s Antenno App, or by contacting Council.
Antenno allows anyone to report issues to Council – attach video, photos and descriptions, and drop a pin on the map.
Council would also like to thank everyone who visits any of the District’s open spaces, reserves and beaches and makes sure to take any rubbish home with them, or disposes of it in one of our public litter bins. By being a responsible, caring person you ensure our beautiful district isn’t marred by litter – and saves the ratepayer money in clean-up costs.
