Proposal would reduce speed limit from 100km/h to 80km/h.

NZTA have opened a consultation on returning the stretch of State Highway 1 from Waitaki Bridge Village to Glenavy to an 80 km/h speed limit.

A lower speed limit previously applied here but was reversed following changes to the Setting of Speed Limits Rule in 2024.

Since the speed limit returned to 100km/h in 2025, NZTA has received considerable feedback from the community and stakeholders that the higher speed limit does not reflect how the road is used through the Glenavy and Waitaki Bridge area.

The consultation information can be found here: SH1 Glenavy south | NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi

The survey can be found here under Targeted Speed Limit Reviews: Canterbury as the majority of SH1 covered by the proposed change is in the Canterbury Region - Targeted speed limit reviews – Canterbury | New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi

The consultation closes on August 25, 2026.
