Forty “polling stations” for Local Elections 2025
Published on 12 September 2025
Nine Orange Bins, and thirty-one Mail Boxes available for voters this election.
Ballot papers and election candidate information are being delivered to registered voters in the Waitaki District this week.
The 2025 Local Elections are vote-by-post, which means every NZ Post and DX Mailbox in the District becomes a 24-hour polling station from this week until Tuesday 7 October. We’re also placing nine orange ballot bins around the District, so you can drop your ballot off.
The Deadline
Postal votes must be sent by Tuesday 7 October, so if you are using a postbox close to that date – check which days it will be collected from the postbox.
Missed it? You can still vote.
If you miss the chance to postal vote, you can drop your ballot into any of the orange bins located in Palmerston, Hampden, Ōamaru, Ōamaru North, Duntroon, Kurow or Omarama by midday on Saturday 11 October. If you're on the roll, but didn't receive your ballot, come and make a Special Vote at Council HQ.
Rural Collection
For those on Rural Collection, you can pop your completed ballot in the pre-paid envelope into your mailbox, raise the carrier flag, and you’re set. A polling station, right at the end of your driveway.
Make Your Vote Council
At the 2022 Local Elections, turnout in Waitaki dropped to 45.5%, a nearly 9% drop on the 2019 Local Elections. This year, we’re encouraging the 16,400 Waitakians on the electoral roll to have a read of the candidate information, check out the videos hosted on Council’s site and then drop off their ballot at an orange bin, or post it back via their nearest public mail box.
Where are the Mail Boxes and Orange Bins? Glad you asked.
You can drop your ballot into an NZ Post or DX Mailbox until October 7th. After that, please place it in one of our orange ballot bins to make sure your vote counts.
