Kakanui Bridge deconstruction to begin

Deconstruction of the old Kakanui Bridge will begin this week, making way for a new boat ramp downstream of the new Kākaunui Bridge.

The site will be fenced off to allow for deconstruction, and while Council and SSG recognise local attachment to the bridge – please do not enter the site and attempt to remove souvenirs.

The site will contain significant hazards, and public access will not be permitted at any time.

The bridge removal project was put out to tender, with submissions ranging from $256,764.75 ex GST dollars to $715,978.09 ex GST.

The contract for the deconstruction and removal of the bridge was awarded to local firm Specialised Services Group (SSG) at the lowest submitted cost.

SSG’s proposal offered the best value, as it included the removal of the bridge and the recovery and resale of the main timber components, reducing the overall project cost to the ratepayer.

SSG will not be responding to enquiries regarding bridge materials or memorabilia. Any information, if available, will be released publicly.
