Beloved councillor Jim Hopkins passes away

Waitaki District Council is deeply saddened by the passing of Councillor Jim Hopkins this morning (Monday 27 July).

Councillor Hopkins was a long-standing elected member and a dedicated representative of the Waitaki community. His contribution to local government and to the district over many years will be remembered with respect and gratitude.

Mayor Mel Tavendale said Council’s thoughts are with Councillor Hopkins’ family, friends, colleagues, and the many people across Waitaki who knew and loved him.

Chief Executive Alex Parmley said Council staff and elected members would be supported as the organisation responds to this sad news.

Jim Hopkins is well known across New Zealand as a radio and television host, scriptwriter and author, and for the past two decades he devoted himself to the people of Waitaki through his role as a councillor. His service, voice and commitment left a lasting mark on the district he proudly represented.

Cr Hopkins was elected to Council as Oamaru Ward Councillor in 2007 and remained in office until his passing in the early hours of Monday. He also served for three years as Deputy Mayor, having been sworn into the role on 19 October 2010. Prior to his time in Waitaki, Jim also served four terms as Councillor on Banks Peninsula Council.

Waitaki Mayor Mel Tavendale said Cr Hopkins was a true voice for the people, respected across both Council and the wider community, and would be deeply missed.

“He was a fierce advocate for the people of Waitaki, both within and beyond council, and he scrutinised every detail. He kept us all honest,” she said.

“The council chamber will not be the same without him, his passionate arguments, attention to detail and incredible wit.

“Jim believed in democracy and he believed in Waitaki. I can only say again how deeply Jim will be missed as a councillor and as a friend,” Mayor Tavendale said.

Waitaki Chief Executive Alex Parmley also expressed his sorrow at Jim’s passing. “Jim always brought a very considered approach to his responsibilities on Council, together with a wicked sense of humour and that was something we all valued.

“I extend my condolences to his family and friends. We are working with Jim’s family to provide a fitting farewell for a deeply community-minded man whose commitment is something we can all look up to.”

Mayor Mel Tavendale asks that we respect the privacy of Jim's family and loved ones at this challenging time and give them the space to grieve and support one another in private.

A condolences book will be available at the council for people to sign. Details of a memorial service will be circulated over the next few days and council will lower its flag to half mast as a mark of respect.
