As the NBA finals series between the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder picks up again this week, Oamaru’s steampunk playground half-court is getting a very special basketball upgrade.

Earlier this year Waitaki District Council entered a competition held by Basketball New Zealand and Schick to get a brand new basketball hoop and backboard, and won.

Sport and Leisure Manager for Waitaki District Council Matthew Lanyon says: “We’d like to thank everyone who’s contributed to the playground getting a really special upgrade.

We couldn’t have done this without the efforts of Sport Waitaki and Basketball Otago, both of whom were absolutely essential to us winning the competition. These community organisations really do a lot to make sure Waitakians have great sporting options, and inspire the athletes of the future.

Our contractors Green By Nature have also been great, removing the old hoop and setting the foundations up for this new install.”
