Twenty-nine cafes or restaurants have signed up for using the BYO Cups.
Orange cups, and orange posters, are helping to reduce the amount of single-use coffee cups heading to landfill this summer.
A collaboration between Waitaki District Council, Waitaki Resource Recovery Trust and BYO Cups Oamaru – and 29 participating cafes or restaurants – seeks to reduce Waitaki’s contribution to the over 295-million single use coffee cups that go to landfill in New Zealand.
There’s also no recycling facility for single-use coffee cups in Waitaki.
Chantal Barnes, Council’s Waste Minimisation Officer, says: “Reducing the amount of waste that’s made in Waitaki, particularly waste which can’t be recycled locally, really can start as small as one coffee at a time.”
Look out for the BYO Cups posters in your local café, and consider bringing your own resuable cup if you have one.
