A public service to commemorate Armistice Day 2022 will take place at the RSA Gardens of Memories, Ōamaru on Friday 11 November. The service is due to begin at 10.45am.

Waitaki District Mayor, Gary Kircher said, “After 4 years of dreadful fighting and the loss of millions of lives including those who served from Waitaki, the signing of The Armistice was the first step toward the end of World War I. It is important to remember those who served, were lost, and the steps taken to end the bloodshed.”

Armistice Day represents the moment when hostilities ceased on the Western Front in 1918, following the signing of an armistice. It was signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, although fighting continued until sundown.

Armistice Day is observed in Belgium, France, Canada, Serbia, New Zealand and many more countries across the globe.

Armistice Day 2022 in Waitaki will be recognised by a service which includes a welcome and introduction by Mayor Gary Kircher, an address by Councillor Guy Percival, Laying of Wreaths and Last Post will be played by Ray Walker.

The Ode will be recited by Tessa Robertson before Ray Walker plays Reveille. The service will end with a 2-minute silence at 11am and ATC will form a guard of honour.
