Waitaki’s newest community assets — the Forrester Gallery extension, the Network Waitaki Events Centre and the Kakanui Bridge — are not only great additions for locals, they have also delivered a strong lift for the district’s economy.

As Waitaki District Council delivers these three major infrastructure projects, local construction, building and trades businesses have secured nearly $10 million in work.

The Kakanui Bridge replacement included about $2.4 million in work for local contracting firms, including construction of the abutments and road approaches.

With the Network Waitaki Events Centre nearing completion, almost 30% of project spend — about $5.6 million — has gone to local subcontractors. While some specialist work wasn’t available locally, efforts were made to ensure Council’s $15 million contribution and the Event Centre Trust’s fundraising delivered clear benefits for Waitaki businesses.

The Forrester Gallery extension also supported local supply and services, with Naylor Love partnering with Placemakers Oamaru as the primary materials provider due to its proximity to the Humber Street site. In total, about $2 million went to local contractors.

Altogether, around $10 million has flowed to local subcontractors — showing how investing in community projects can deliver lasting facilities and real economic value for Waitaki.

Waitaki District Council CEO said, “As a council we need to invest a lot in the district’s infrastructure including roading and waters. We want to ensure that we get the most benefit for the district from this. This doesn’t just mean getting competitive pricing but also encouraging and supporting our local businesses to secure the work so what we invest benefits our local economy and jobs. It is encouraging to see community-led projects delivering tangible benefits for local people and businesses — with most funding coming from Central Government and the community.

The new and upgraded facilities are world-class additions — real gems that will benefit our community for many years to come as well as showcasing what our local businesses can help deliver.”.
