New Seed Library

Ōamaru, Palmerston and Hampden Libraries will be opening their free seed library for customers 25th September 2023.

It will be available until the seeds run out.

Seed saving and sharing allows people to try gardening at a lower cost, practice sustainable and self-sufficient living, encourage greater biodiversity in their community and provide a habitat and food for animals and insects.

What is a seed library?

The seed library is a joint initiative of the Ōamaru, Palmerston and Hampden Libraries and our communities.

Our aim is to encourage people to grow healthy food, get active in the garden and share a knowledge and love of gardening.

The library has a large collection of gardening books to help with any project.

How it works

  • Bring into the library a packet of unused seeds and swap for another packet of seeds from the display
  • Pick up a packet of free garden seeds at your library
  • Plant and grow your seeds at home
  • Enjoy your harvest!
  • Save some seeds from your plants to donate back to the library for your community.

We gratefully accept donations of any spare plant seeds (that are not illegal, noxious or invasive!). These seeds are packaged plastic-free and shared out to the community.
