With assistance from Universities and Museums across the South Island, Mary Duff has completed this debut illustrated Children’s non-fiction book about basic fossil formation, and the origins of the Waitaki Whitestone UNESCO Global Geopark. This whale of a story is based on a true story, the discovery of an ancient extinct transitional whale fossil found in North Otago, Aotearoa New Zealand. Inspired by the author's own memories of growing up in that same location, during the time of discovery, it is written for the 5-9 age group.

The key features of this book are:

  • Relatable resource for Earth Science and STEMA education for ages 5–9.
  • Illustrations feature art by the students of Duntroon School, elements by renowned watercolor artist Burns Pollock with some additions by the author - guided by Burns, and real photos from the actual fossil dig in 1994.
  • Introduces world-renowned paleontologist Late Emeritus Professor Ewan Fordyce.
  • Printed and created in New Zealand Aotearoa.
  • $1 per book sold will be donated to Otago Rural Support Trust in aid of rural suicide prevention.
