Meters

Council installs water meters on some properties that are on On-Demand supplies and charges for the actual volume of water used.

There is a cost in treating water and delivering it to consumers. This cost is generally covered through the standard water supply charge paid by all consumers.

On the district’s On-Demand supplies, some properties may use (or have potential to use, or have used in the past) more water than an average domestic household. This high water use is known as extraordinary use. Examples of extraordinary use include business and commercial.

Meters are installed at properties with extraordinary use so that the cost of treating and supplying the additional water used can be recovered by Council. This ‘user pays’ approach prevents the costs of high water use being passed on to other consumers.

In some cases, it is not appropriate to install a meter at a property on an On-Demand supply and a Restricted supply may be provided instead.
