Waitaki Free Wi-Fi

The Waitaki District Council activated free public Wi-Fi in areas of Palmerston, Omarama and Oamaru late last month, with more locations set to join. The project was passed by council in September last year, with councillors acknowledging that better connectivity would be a boon for residents and visitors alike. Mayor for Waitaki Gary Kircher said the council was keen to expand the service to key locations throughout the district but would determine where during annual plan discussions.

Users logged into the "Waitaki Wifi" network would also be taken to a home page that would help promote the region.

Mayor for Waitaki Gary Kircher said, "The Wi-Fi provides a useful digital amenity for the local community and will also provide key information to visitors so they can enjoy our district. A friendly 'landing page' will provide useful information relating to the district and can be tailored to each community area so that relevant activities and events are easily found. Visitors can help promote the district as they post photos and stories of their travels through Waitaki."

"The central service provided an important digital amenity for the community, especially to those affected by the digital divide who otherwise could not afford internet at home."  Though the amenity could not reach private households, it would help provide "equal access to the internet".
