Following a fundraising campaign, and getting major sponsors on board, the Waitaki district will have three new Christmas trees this year in Palmerston, Kurow and Oamaru. They will be installed in the last week of November through to the start of December.
Oamaru's Christmas tree will be set up on the grassed area opposite Council HQ and a special event has been organised to celebrate the lighting of the tree for the first time. Join us on Tuesday Dec 1st from 8pm at Jones' Park on the corner of Thames and Itchen Streets, where there will be a free sausage sizzle and other treats. A choir will sing Christmas carols as we make our way to the tree lighting once its dark, at around 9pm.
Mayor for Waitaki Gary Kircher said, "It's time to get into the Christmas spirit, and what better way with an amazing new tree, and a celebration of the start of the Christmas period. Covid has caused a lot of issues this past 8 months, and it's an opportunity to shake off those Covid blues and join together for this special event. Although the late sunset means the event is being held from 8pm, we hope a good number of families will still be able to join us. Merry Christmas everyone!"
