Funding a bridge to safety and further A2O amenities

Otago Community Trust have approved funding of $177,297 to the Friends of the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail. These funds will be used to construct the long awaited clip-on bridge for Awahokomo Stream and to provide a permanent toilet on the new section of trail between Sailors Cutting and Benmore Dam.

This funding will improve safety and complete the task of taking the trail off SH83 as well as make the ride more enjoyable. Adair Craik from the Friends of the Alps 2 Ocean said, "We are so pleased to have reached this milestone and wish to thank Otago Community Trust and all our funders. The new section of trail has proven very popular since it opened and we continue to receive fantastic comments about this section with domestic tourism continuing to make a significant contribution to our local communities. Many businesses along the trail have benefitted economically, in what would have been a difficult trading period due to Covid 19.

The numbers of cyclists using the A20 Trail, significantly increased this season, with New Zealander's looking for opportunities to do something active. One Trail operator reported an increase in numbers of 83% from 2020, which is phenomenal. Cyclists view the A20 Trail as the 'jewel in the Crown' of the 23 great rides currently on offer around New Zealand."

Mayor Gary Kircher was thrilled by the result. "Thanks to Friends of the Alps 2 Ocean, the trail will take another step in cementing its place as one of the premium trails, not only in New Zealand, but internationally. The feedback from riders, the use by our locals, and the economic benefits to communities throughout Waitaki are appreciable. We are so lucky to have such a wonderful asset in our district!"
