Refuse transfer station
The Oamaru landfill closed on 21 April 2017 and has been replaced by a new refuse transfer station (RTS) located in Oamaru's North End. The RTS is owned and operated by Waste Management NZ Limited.
Council has a Memorandum of Understanding with Waste Management NZ Limited and the Waitaki Resource Recovery Trust to ensure good quality, affordable and accessible waste management and minisation services are available for our community to use.
The decision to replace the landfill with a new transfer station was made in 2012 after it was publicly consulted on as part of our 2012-22 Long Term Plan and Waste Minimisation and Management Plan.
At the time, Council looked at the option of building another landfill, however, this was not affordable for a community our size. These days new landfills have strict environmental and consenting rules, which means they are very expensive to build and run - much more expensive than transferring refuse to a landfill outside the district. Our district also doesn’t produce enough waste to make a new landfill cost-effective.
A new landfill would have had a far bigger impact on rates and user charges than the new transfer station.
Keeping your costs down
We’ll continue to make sure there are opportunities available to help you reduce your waste management costs– so the more you reduce, reuse and recycle, the more you save.
We are working closely with the Waitaki Resource Recovery Trust (who run the recovery park in Oamaru) and providing them with ongoing financial support so they can continue to offer the community top notch recycling and recovery services. They do a great job in helping make sure it’s as easy as possible to reduce, reuse and recycle.
We’ll also make sure you can continue to choose from the range of private contractors who offer kerbside collection of recycling and greenwaste (in addition to their refuse collection services).
