Council has made changes to the amount and criteria available for funding heritage projects in Waitaki, with $50,000 available in the first round and $100,000 next year. The fund, along with the heritage consent fee waiver and access to advice and support, are ways that Council can support owners of heritage buildings.
Heritage Advisor Heather Bauchop said she hopes that the restructured fund will be able to better support owners to look after their heritage places – through support for building works that look after the heritage values of a place and access to funding to help understand places better – like condition reports or seismic assessments.
Applications to the fund will open in November and close at the end of January for a February meeting of the Grants and Awards Committee.
Heritage, Environment and Regulatory Acting Group manager Roger Cook said, “It is hoped that by improving the processes for granting the Waitaki Heritage fund we will be able to assist more property owners to maintain the wonderful heritage buildings in the district. Regular and promoted funding rounds mean building owners can prepare applications, our Heritage Advisor can contribute to that process and support Council in their decision-making. We look forward to seeing projects that will ensure the rich heritage building portfolio that is so unique to Waitaki is maintained and available for future residents and visitors to appreciate."
Applications, and information sheets for building owners will be available on the council website from November.
