The Otematata river can rise rapidly when heavy rainfall occurs. After recent flooding events, and with an eye to future evacuations should they arise, Council has made changes to how people can camp at Otematata Boat Harbour Camping Ground this year.

Boat Harbour camping ground has now been divided into two areas: green and red. The green area is available for season ticket holders, but the red flood area will now be available solely for casual camping vehicle units who must be staying on the site overnight.

This is to ensure that any evacuations of people and their gear can be carried out safely and fast in the event of a flood.

Due to the decrease in available season ticket area, season tickets may only be purchased from the Waitaki District Council Customer Liaison Team or the Camp supervisors.

Councillor Ross McRobie, who lives in and represents the Ahuriri ward said that while he appreciated that some campers would be disappointed by this news, after the experience of 2020’s flooding Council must manage the risk to the public and this was seen as the best way to do that and ensure campers could be evacuated from the area when the river was at dangerous levels.
