Garrow Family Archives

Vignette by John Garrow, Waitaki Archives 19928.jpg

The Waitaki Archives is like a sibling to the Forrester Gallery. The archives are full of records that document our past. Some of these records, like the Garrow Family archives, have artistic merit that we want to share with our visitors.

The Garrow family moved to New Zealand from Scotland in 1877 and settled at Ardgowan, ŇĆamaru in 1883. John Garrow was the second of the adult children who emigrated with the family. He had worked as a Vignette Engraver in Glasgow before his journey to the other side of the world.

A selection of John’s vignettes made it to New Zealand and were saved by the family, and donated to the Waitaki Archives. This exhibition showcases the lovely collection of delicate vignettes that have survived all these years.
