Mooring in Oamaru Harbour

The Oamaru Harbour is one of the last remaining examples of a Victorian port in New Zealand.  The harbour is  enclosed by a breakwater to the East and Holmes Wharf to the North.  The berths adjacent to Holmes Wharf are occupied by commercial fishermen and the ocean off the Oamaru coast is particularly good for blue cod.  The harbour’s proximity to the Heritage area of Oamaru and the fact that it is no longer a working port makes it an ideal place for the mooring of recreational vessels of a small to medium size.

The authority responsible for the moorings is the Waitaki District Council and all applications for a mooring should be made to the Council.

The fee for mooring is currently $150.00 per annum.

The process for obtaining a mooring is as follows;

1. Apply to the Council for a mooring

2. The Council sends out an application form

3. The Council receives the completed form and the fee.

4. Applicant is directed to the person who will inform them where to put their mooring and to what standard the mooring must be.

Please note:  all costs for the construction and placement of the mooring are to be borne by the applicant.
