Drones and unmanned aircrafts

Flying drone in a sunny day. Before you fly a drone in the Waitaki District, there are a few things you need to know. The term ‘drone’ includes all remotely piloted aircraft systems, quadcopters, unmanned aerial vehicles or UAVand unmanned aerial systems.

Firstly, Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulates civil aviation in New Zealand and sets the rules around the use of remotely piloted aircraft systems: unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), unmanned aerial systems (UAS), model aircraft and drones.  The CAA rules include the requirement for people to obtain approval from the land owner or the occupier of the land you want to fly over. Please visit Civil Aviation Authority website to view the rules.
