Damage to plants and ground in the Oamaru Public Gardens has led Council to take steps to reduce the number of the rabbits.
Rabbits will be shot by experienced people in the evenings (5pm to 8am) on Wednesday 31 May and
Thursday 1 June.
Recreation Manager Erik van der Spek says the rabbit population is affecting the new bedding plants and a reduction is necessary.
“For safety reasons, the gardens will be closed to the public while shooting takes place,” says Mr van der Spek. “We’ll work with contractor Downer to make sure all entry points into the gardens are appropriately signposted and there will also be barrier tape around other areas where deemed necessary.”
The culling of rabbits in the Public Gardens has occurred in the past and is only undertaken when necessary.
