Oamaru's 'gem' continues to flourish

Oamaru view from lookout point. A gem of Oamaru, the Oamaru harbour area development is set to continue with expressions of interest being sought to construct visitor accommodation.

The popular area has seen considerable development over recent years, including the creation of a Steampunk-themed children’s playground, a café, and more recently, the opening of a bike skills park specifically targeting young children so they have a safe and fun environment to learn how to ride their bikes.

Mayor Gary Kircher says the harbour area is very popular with both locals and visitors all year round and is often used as a venue for different events and activities.

“It has steadily become a destination for visitors and when the town hosts events such as the Victorian Heritage festival, Steampunk, sports events and outdoor movie nights, large crowds are seen in the area.  Every weekend the area is a focal point for local people and visitors as they enjoy the attractions on offer.”

The popularity is such that there has been interest in developing more land and the next stage is to make two sites on Esplanade Drive and Tyne Street available for purchase or lease, most likely to be developed into visitor accommodation.

“Although our Harbour Strategy has identified these sites as being ideal for visitor accommodation, Council will consider other complementary proposals.”

“This is an outstanding piece of real estate in Oamaru and we’re very excited to see what future developments can make the area even greater than it is today.”

“That said, we are mindful of the potential effects on surrounding properties and as a good neighbour we want to see suitable development go ahead that enhances both the neighbourhood and the town’s growth.”

Expressions of interest will be sought and interested parties will have until Friday 4 August to submit proposals.
