Special Waste

What is special waste?
Special waste is waste that needs to be treated differently from the general waste which is buried at the landfill.  It includes materials such as roofing asbestos.

Where do I take my special waste?
Oamaru Landfill accepts some special wastes in accordance with Waitaki District Council’s Solid Waste Bylaw.

Why does special waste cost more?
Special waste may requires special handling, such as being buried immediately, having special pits dug prior to disposal, having the coordinates GPS’s, recording the information and reporting the information to the Regional Council.  This all adds to the cost of disposal, which is recouped from the person wishing to dispose of the waste.

What wastes are accepted?
A full description of the wastes that are accepted and those that are not accepted are contained in Waitaki District Council’s Solid Waste Bylaw.

What do I do with waste that can’t be landfilled?
The Regional Council coordinates the collection and disposal of hazardous waste.  Contact the Regional Council for details.

Council’s Resource Recovery Park in Chelmer Street, Oamaru may accept small quantise of hazardous waste from domestic households.

There are a number of companies who specialise in the disposal of hazardous waste.
