Kerbside Recycling

Kerbside Recycling

Council investigated kerbside recycling as a means to reduce the amount of waste to landfill.  Some of the options available were very effective at reducing the amount of waste to landfill as they included the kerbside collection of garden waste, food scraps, and recycling; while other options were considerably less effective only collecting the recyclables.  Garden waste and food scraps make up the largest component of the waste stream from households at somewhere between 40 to 45%, while recyclables only make up 17% by weight.
However it was apparent that no one scheme would suit everyone.  People who home composted did not want a kerbside collection of garden waste, and some people did not want any kerbside collection – being happier to have a drop off system.  Some people wanted bins and other preferred crates.
