| Waste
Council has made a decision to focus on waste minimisation rather than providing kerbside recycling. Kerbside recycling is now left to the private market. This brings many advantages to the Waitaki District.
- People get to chose the service they want and can afford
- There are no added burden onto the rates for services where they are not needed
- People with holiday homes can made their own arrangements to suit
- People who generate more waste will pay more than those who generate less
- Competition is encouraged in the market place
- Council focus is on reducing the problem rather than end of pipe solutions such as recycling
- Waste minimisation is of far greater benefit to the environment than recycling
- By minimising waste the community will get the most from it’s resources and this will result in an economic benefit to the district
