MICROCHIPPING DOGS
WHY do I need to microchip my dog?
Government regulation:
"The new dog control laws will make NZ a safer place for children, and will also make dogs themselves and other animals safer by giving councils greater tools and powers to ensure better control of wandering, menacing and dangerous dogs. Microchipping and the new national dog information database will help responsible dog owners by making it easier to reunite them with their lost dogs, or to identify stolen dogs. Microchipping itself is not likely to reduce the number, or seriousness of dog attacks, but as part of a range of control measures, it will make a significant contribution to the safety of our children and communities”
Fiona Illingsworth - Mngr Local Govt Policy - Dept of Int Affairs
What dogs need to be chipped?
- ALL new dogs first registered on or after 01–JULY-2006
- All dogs classified as Menacing or Dangerous including those classified since 1 Dec 03
(The owners of these dogs will have been informed if their dog has been classified as menacing or dangerous)
- Registered dogs impounded for a second time and are released.
- Unregistered dogs that are impounded and released.
Certification of Chipping will be required with new registrations.
