Submissions to Council’s draft roading strategy and policies closed
on 30 June 2008, followed by a Council meeting on Tuesday 8th July 2008 to hear verbal submissions.
More than 60 written submissions were received from individuals and stakeholder groups, many of them relating to specific roads in the District. A high proportion of submissions raised issues related to the impact of increased economic activity on the District’s roads, such as dust problems caused by more trucks on rural roads. The issues of long term affordability and sustainability of an upgraded roading network were also raised in a number of submissions.
A workshop was held on Tuesday 15th July 2008 for Councillors to discuss submissions and consider what changes may need to be made to the policies to reflect the outcome of the consultation. The public will have another opportunity to provide feedback on Council’s roading policies in April 2009, when they are included in Council’s ten year plan - the Waitaki Community Plan 2009-19.
