Tired drivers in the spotlight.

A large numbers of accidents within the Waitaki District are due to fatigued drivers passing through our district.

Driver fatigue was a contributing factor to more than 40 deaths and 1,000 injuries in road crashes last year.

Waitaki road Safe Incorporated is a local group dedicated to safer motoring within the Waitaki District and has been serving the Community for over 50 years.

As a result Waitaki Road Safe Incorporated in conjunction with local police and the Waitaki District Council’s Community Safety Officer will be running a fatigue stop within the Oamaru area over the early Christmas Holiday period.

Sergeant Peter Muldrew and his Police staff will assist the Waitaki Road Safe Incorporated team in stopping the traffic so drivers and passengers can be spoken to.

The aim of the Fatigue Stop is to highlight the benefits that small breaks from driving can refresh and revitalise drivers increase alertness.

Over 100 motorists heading away over the holiday period will be stopped and given a road safe messages as well as a small refreshment break.

A very good response was received from the public from the first stop in October and a further two stops are planned for the New Year.
